Ayanda Vabaza

I am from the Eastern Cape and studied at Stellenbosch University. I am a qualified chartered accountant working in investments with a passion for social entrepreneurship and active investment in our communities and our people. Having always been involved in various community upliftment initiatives since I was 16, joining FLY was an easy decision because the impact of what FLY does is tangible and measurable. I am an activist for women’s rights, mental health awareness and quality education. I am passionate about people and empowering the black child. Excellence is what has driven me and in my role as the head of the Western Cape region, the following quote is my mantra:
“When others sit, we stand.
When others stand, we stand out.
When others stand out, we are outstanding.
When others are outstanding, we set the standard.”, Anon

I was born in the Eastern Cape, to parents who believe that education is of the utmost importance. My father is a magistrate and my mother a nurse by profession. At the end of matric, I received a bursary to study accounting at the University of Cape Town as so for me education is an enabler and excellence is a prerequisite. NgesiXhosa we say ‘ukuhamba kukubona’ which loosely means as you expose yourself so you learn.

Professionally I am a qualified Chartered Accountant and I lead on Enterprise and Supplier Development at Old Mutual. Here my role is to develop small and growing businesses by providing affordable enterprise finance, access to the Old Mutual value and supply chains and providing business development interventions.

As the Chairperson of this wonderful organisation, Fun Learning for Youth (FLY) my vision is to create positive futures through education for young learners from disadvantaged communities. I am particularly passionate about developing relevant skills for youth and making a contribution to sustainable entrepreneurship.

I would drop almost everything to travel the world. I am an avid reader and I dabble in photography.

I am one part accountant, one part wife and two parts entrepreneurship enthusiast.

Kwezi is originally from King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape. He came to Cape Town in 2002 to further his studies. He has over 8 years experience in private banking and is currently with Investec Private Bank. Having grown up in rural Eastern Cape, this has made him appreciate the power education has to change the lives of many. He is a tutor in the Grade 8 class and is grateful for the opportunity to give back.

I am Ndumiso Zulu, from Umlazi Township, south of Durban in KZN. I have 3 siblings and did my entire schooling career in Umlazi. I got above average marks (as a result of extra classes, similar to the FLY model) in school and was able to obtain a Gallagher scholarship to study any degree at UCT. I chose Bcomm Accounting undergrad, Bcomm Honours in FAPM.

My passion has been to tutor (mathematics, which I tutored for 3 years in university) and make money (hence the career path I chose). I decided to join FLY so I could give students the opportunity that I was afforded, which has yielded great results (relatively).

I am a private equity investment professional. I chose this career path because I believe that it encompasses all the key elements I need to learn in order to be a leader in business.

Outside of tutoring and work. I enjoy video games, reading and cooking. Actually, I love cooking.

I like to see myself as a modern day magician, except I look at a company’s communication problems and I find an effective solution to solve those problems – it’s almost like real magic. I believe the best way to have an impact is by telling relatable stories, so I’ve studied the basics of traditional advertising and received my qualification at Varsity College with a Dip in Adv. Mgmt., and AAA School of Advertising With a Dip in Copywriting.

Today, I empower young minds through Fun Learning for Youth by working my magic on corporate marketing and communication projects for the organisation.
